Qualifications

I have been captaining and crewing for the last 14 years in a variety of positions throughout the Mediterranean, US East Coast, Bahamas, Mexico, West Coast, Hawaii and the Caribbean including ocean crossings. I have lived on boats my entire life, and am familiar with all aspects of sailing, maintenance, crewing, and general seamanship.

Engineering/Technology Experience

Sept 2015-May 2016 Electrician, Electronics and Systems Installation and Repair, New England Boat Works

Worked as an electrician and systems tech for a large boat yard (700+ boats), doing
everything from engine overhauls to complete rewiring jobs.  Worked on
boats from 50'-120' mainly, both power and sail. Several large electronics packages
installed, including a complete overhaul of a boat due to lightning damage

May 2012- April 2013 Captain/Engineer, Greenboats Technology

We designed and built a new prototype design for wireless onboard
communications. From the yard all the way across 8000 sea miles, we tested and
developed new technology for a Nautitech 54 catamaran. Installed all major
systems and integrated them with a custom NMEA2000 interface, did most of the
programming and debugging.

2009-May 2012 Owner/Operator, Better Marine Services

Owner of a marine repair and captain services company in San Diego. Trained
and worked with several employees, expanded to cover lower SD bay area.
Installing and repairing marine electronics, electrical, mechanical, and general
yacht maintenance (sail and power) including emergency services.

December 2006-May 2008 Systems Installer, Aquarius Boatworks

Installation of marine electrical systems, plumbing, diesel mechanic, repowers, rudder and hull repair, and drive train adjustment and repair. All aspects of boat maintenance and repair in a busy yard. Promoted twice, and went to electrical school.

2001-2004 Lead Programmer, Healthsoft Online Learning

Worked on building an online learning system for nurses to get CE credits online.  Heavy database design and programming, following DoD and other guidelines to create a reusable online testing system.  Worked from the office for 1 year, then telecommuted while cruising the northern Caribbean.

Charter Experience

June 2014-Present Captain, Night Train & Poppy

Captain of 51' Hinkley and 30' Sparkman & Stevens wooden sloop. Handling all aspects of maintenance, rigging, sailing, and deliveries. Day sails with owner 5 days a week, in Newport, RI and surrounding areas.  Designed new computer system to track inventory and safety items.

October 2013-June 2014 Captain, Resolute

Operating a 53' private crewed charter boat with a chef, running 8-day charters in the USVI and BVIs.  Maintaining the boat, coordinating schedules, and keeping charter guests happy during island cruising for a busy charter season.  Delivery back to RI 2900 Nm. Designed new computer system to track inventory and safety items.

April 2013-October 2013 Captain, Schooner Madeleine

Operating a 74' schooner as a day sail charter boat in Newport, Rhode Island. Duties include 5 daily trips with up to 49 passengers, managing crew, handling basic boat maintenance and following USCG Inspected Vessel rules.

May 2012-April 2013 Captain/Boat Manager, Greenboats

Ran crewed charter in BVIs on 54' catamaran.  Delivery 8000nm to Caribbean/boat show from Europe.  Preparing and operating a new build Nautitech 54 for charter and private use. Managing the launching and testing of prototype design for wireless onboard communications, see more details in Engineering section.  

2009-2012 Captain, Aolani Catamaran

Running private charters aboard a 55’ custom luxury catamaran in San Diego Harbor. Harbor cruises, dinner cruises and catered events.

July 2005-December 2006 Charter Captain, Outrigger Catamaran

Operating a 45' USCG Inspected high-speed racing catamaran for charter off Waikiki Beach in Hawaii. Duties include running day sails, snorkel trips, and sunset sails for up to 49 passengers, vessel maintenance, and keeping an extremely temperamental boat running in peak condition to provide 20+ knot "thrill rides" in heavy offshore conditions.

January 2005-June 2005 Captain, S/V Graziafelice

Operating a 70' luxury catamaran in Roatan. Duties included managing 5 full-time crew & 6 day crew, running day sails for up to 75 passengers, overnight luxury dive charters, web design. Also all maintenance including everything from electrical to plumbing to engines to rigging, generally all the work needed to keep a 96-ton charter vessel operating at her best.

June 2004-July 2004 Captain of “Rainbow Rocket”

Maintained and operated a 1600 horsepower turbocharged racing boat on high-speed trips. 40+ passengers, travelling over 50 mph for 45-minute trips, often up to 8 trips a day in Long Beach Rainbow Harbor.

November 2003 – May 2004 Captain, Sebago Catamarans

Operating three charter catamarans 54’ – 63’ for day sails and snorkelling in Key West. Duties included managing 11 full-time crew, keeping up to 125 passengers safe and happy, and assisting with troubleshooting and safety drills.

Teaching/Instruction Experience

2009- 2012 Instructor, Harbor Sailboats

Teaching advanced coastal cruising and bareboat classes, and occasional corporate regattas and basic sailing classes according to the ASA program. Also delivering boats both to Mexico and up the CA coast.

June 2005-August 2005 Sailing Instructor, Kama’aina Kids

Taught sailing to children ages 6-13 at a summer camp. Ran sailing trips and swimming for 40-70 children daily, helped manage large groups in a summer camp environment. Operated and maintained a variety of small boats, including Hobie cats, power-driven chase boats, and sailing dinghies.

June 2004-December 2004 Sailing Instructor & Maintenance Manager

Taught sailing classes following ASA standards. Also performed all maintenance and repairs for an active charter fleet (18 cruising mono-hulls ranging in size from 25' to 48') and skippered weekend charters for a large West Coast charter company.

October 2004-December 2004 Sailing Instructor, USC

Taught sailing classes University of Southern California course curriculum. Ran overnight teaching trips from Long Beach harbour across to Catalina Island, teaching navigation, seamanship, and sailing.

June 2004-July 2004 Captain for Access to Sailing

Worked as a captain for Access to Sailing, an organisation that provides sailing instruction for physically disabled and mentally handicapped patients as part of their rehabilitation. I sailed a Cal 25, an O’Day 20, a Hood 60, and a 43’ ferro-cement sail boat. Duties included sail and line handling, steering, sailing instruction, and helping with the special needs of handicapped people is a sailing environment.

December 1995-October 1998 Instructor, Seafoam Sailing

Worked in family charter business and summer sailing school, 34’ Morgan sloop, and a pair of 18’ sprit-rigged sailing dinghies.

Other Experience

            May 2008-2009 Captain, S/V Astra in Mediterranean Sea

Sailing and general maintenance of a 63’ high-performance cruising yacht. I sailed with and without owner aboard throughout Greece in Aegean Sea and Turkey coastal waters.

December 2001-October 2003 Captain of S/V Jeito

Captained a 30’ sloop with no engine from North Florida down the “Thorny Path”1200 miles upwind to the Caribbean, spending 2 years island hopping. Duties included all aspects of sailing and working on a small cruising sailboat.

July 1999-October 1999 Crew to Bahamas

Worked on a Hunter 42 cruising the Bahamas for several months. Helped the 85-year-old owner maintain the vessel and make safe island hops down the chain to Georgetown and then back to Miami.
